Mighty Mite neck problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I put a Mighty Mite neck on a Squier body with a bunch of nice Hipshot and Fender hardware and some S-D pups and came up with what I find to be an outstanding sounding bass. Problem with the neck is that the frets are protruding off the sides of the fretboard a little.

I don't recall them being like that when I put it together and I suspect the wood was not fully cured and it is shrinking. This is a maple fretboard. Can this be repaired without removing the frets? If they need to be removed and 'trimmed' what would be a reasonable price for the job?

Wood tends to shrink a little in the dry winter months, exposing the ends of your frets. It's most likely NOT a defect in your neck. Have a repairman file those down for ya, and it will never be an issue again.

Thanks. So do you think they can be filed on the neck or will they have to be removed?

The frets are not removed for this procedure.

No, the frets stay in. Just a little filing with a careful hand and you'll be all set.

It's best to take care of this issue while it's happening, so don't wait until June to take it to a luthier.

If you can get ahold of Dan Erlewine's repair book, there's a good explanation of dressing the ends of frets.

And here's a clip that'll give you a feel for it:
Fret End Dressing File - YouTube

You can search for "fret end dressing" and find other stuff like that.
