MIM Fender Jazz Bass V pickguard replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
I'll soon be receiving my new (to me) 2006 MIM Fender Standard Jazz Bass V. It's black with a white pickguard, but I tend to prefer tortoise shell guards on my basses. So, I've decided to replace the guard on this bass.

I know it's a simple thing to do, but the fact is that I've never done it before. So, I don't know what's involved. Basically, I have one question that I have not been able to find the answer to, after many hours of searching online.

Are the electronics (the neck pickup) attached to the plastic portion of a Jazz Bass pickguard? Or, is it as simple as just removing the screws and swapping the old one for the new one?

I've changed pickguards on Stratocaster guitars in the past. It's relatively easy, but remounting the electronics can be a pain in the butt.

On the Jazz, it looks like the neck pickup is attached to the body and the pickguard should just lift off. But, I haven't been able to find any sources to confirm this. I don't want to just take out the screws with the strings on, start sliding the pickguard off, and *then* find out that the pickup is mounted to it, after I accidentally rip apart a solder joint. This would be a real PITA.

So, can anyone tell me if the pickguard is attached to anything other than the body?

Thanks!

A j bass pickguard is purely decorative. Do not tighten the screws any more than just lightly snug as they strip super easy.
