MIM Jazz bass truss rod

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

A few weeks ago a buddy of mine gave me his Jazz bass to use/borrow pretty much indefinitely. (and recently offered it to me for sale) Anyway it had sat in a closet for about 10 years with the strings at about standard tuning. Needless to say it needed a truss rod adjustment. I have adjusted a few truss rods on my own stuff but I wouldn't say i have a lot of experience with this. So, I started adjusting strings loose, about a 1/4 turn wait a day then another 1/4 turn. At about 3/4 of a turn on day three it really started to come around. At this point its just about straight with slight front bow. Its very playable where it is now I would like for it to be straight but I am afraid to go much farther and fairly pleased with the current setup. Currently, I am at about a full turn and an 1/8. thats a lot of adjustment much farther then say my 15 year old american tele which had its first adjustment ever recnetly the neck went straight at 1/4 turn.

I guess my question is, should I continue or not ?

Its had a lot of adjustment from what I read on the net.

Advice ?

Thanks!

Who knows for sure where you started the adjustment in the first place.

You may have to de-string it and take the neck off and see where you/it are and go from there.

I've heard tell that it's a good idea to add a washer or two under the nut to keep you in the threads of the rod itself.

It would also be a really good thing to do to take the nut off and lubricate it - or at least put a drop of oil on the portion you can see - where the nut meets the rod.

A lot of damage can be done by going into virgin unthreaded shaft with the nut when you are out of adjustment.

From there the slippery slope wins.

I am positive knowing the previous owner as well as i do he never had it adjusted so it started out at where the factory had it. I have taken off the neck and checked what was going on underneath it (where the body and neck attach) theres nothing but a circular metal bit level with the neck about 3/4" in circumference. I did not notice any ill effects under the neck joint. I may add that washer you are taking about up by the neck/head and a drop of some lub would benefit no doubt.

I know I haven't got to the point of no more threads left I would have felt that making an adjustment.

thanks surferjoe
