MIM Jazz with a "sticky" neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had my MIM Jazz for years, sitting in a closet while my far nicer Stingray has soaked up all the love and glory the whole time. Recently dug out the J-bass, gave it a quick setup, tried to play and man that neck is sticky compared to my ray.

So here's the question: what can i do to fix the stickiness? Is there something I should treat it with? Should I sand it down? I love the barely finished feeling that my stingray gives me but I don't want to do anything too drastic that might damage the MIM jazz. Suggestions?

Take 0000 steel wool and do the back of your neck. It will become a satin finish instead of gloss and will be much easier to play with.

Thanks guys! Anything I need to do before or after I take the steel wool to it? Should I use anything particular to clean the neck first? I understand I should tape off the pickups to keep metal bits out of the magnets.

Just take some wool, cup it in your hand, and go to work with long even strokes. Be careful around the side of the fretboard, if you remove too much material your frets could sprout a little bit. Nothing to it. The neck will feel great!
