MIM P: Warmouth Neck???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks,
I have been seriously considering buying a Warmouth neck and installing it on my MIM Fender P-Bass. I had a MIJ Fretless Jazz which I put a fretted Warmouth neck on. I loved that bass, wish I still had it. My dilemma, a high class problem, is that my Mexi P-bass sounds really good like it is. The question I have for you all is this: Would a Warmouth neck make this bass sound and play a lot better???

Not if it sounds good already. If the original neck is shot, then it might be worth replacing. The Warmoth neck has heavy steel rods in the neck for stability and this will change the sound somewhat (and make the bass neck- dive worse than it does already.) You'll probably want to level and dress the frets on the new neck to get it to play as nicely as possible.

The sound will change some but I can't tell if you'll like it or not. The guys who use Warmoth necks are usually pleased with them.

What's wrong with the neck you have?

I don't think I'd be investing the time and money to swap out a neck I was pleased with....but that's just me

I'd leave the bass well alone, unless the neck went tits up.

And, it's warMOTH. not warMOUTH. Not picking, but I see that so often, it drives me nuts.

+1. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." It's uber important to know what you're doing to get just the right fit. So not only do you risk losing that sound you like, but you might also make the playability worse. Warmoth necks aren't bad though: nice and reinforced.

It's not that there is anything wrong with the neck that's on the bass, but I thought a WarMOTH neck might bump the bass up a few notches. I am planning to build a bass out of Warmoth parts at some point, but this one would be a lined fretless with a MM and a Jazz pickup. I was thinking that it would be cool to upgrade my P-bass to sound even better than it already does.

IME, if you're sticking with the same woods, you're not going to make a huge difference. Don't fix it if it ain't broke

If this really bothers you guys, maybe you spend a little too much time on TB.com and not enough time reading about other things going on in the world like poverty, AIDS, global warming, US prison rates, Iraq, etc.

Forgot to mention. The warmoth neck will make your mexi-P dive hard. If you have to get the warmoth neck , try a 2+2 headstock with gb7 tuners - it helps a little bit.

I wasn't trying to be preachy. Sarcastic? Maybe a little, although I am concerned about those things and talk to friends about them. I have to be careful not to let those kind of things upset me too much, hence post #9.
