Mineral spirit + WD-40=?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Ibanez (Guitar) an the trem system and tuners are horrible so I think I am going to let them soak in mineral spirits and a little bit of WD-40. Is this ok? My two main questions are , will the MS somehow tarnish or ruin the parts? I dont want to walk in my garage in the morning and find it has desolved completly! Also is WD-40 a safe lubricate to use with MS? I dont wanna make mustard gas or anything that could harm the parts. I am 90% it will be ok I just dont want to ruin the parts.

Why do you want to soak the tuners?

Why do you want to mix two chemicals together?

Petroleum distillates do not dissolve metals.

WD-40 (Water Displacement-fortieth attempt) is not a lubricant.

A paper towel and some naphtha or mineral spirits should take care of the problem.

N.B. Rags soaked in mineral spirits or naphtha can spontaneously combust. Soak them in water and let them dry flat. When they are dry dispose as normal.

Wisdom. ^^

There is no need to try and invent some new chemical when you can do it without that. There is such a thing as odorless mineral spirits if you want to get some.

Other options are to use Goof-Off or really good adhesive removal stuff, Motzenbocker's Lift-Off, available at ACE Hardware.

These are sealed tuners, right? If so, they require no lubrication. The are lubricated for life.

A sealed tuner is permanently assembled and cannot be disassembled for service or lubrication. And since it is SEALED, you cannot lubricate it. Immersing it in any solvent can only harm or dissolve the lubricant inside, and you cannot replace that lubricant.

Therefore, do not immerse those tuners in any solvent. Just wipe them down with a cloth that has your desired solvent on it. Again - odorless Mineral Spirits (Paint Thinner) should work, as will Goof-Off, as will Motzenbocker's lift-off. If you have to do some rubbing, so be it.

WD-40 is made to displace water. That's all it is designed to do. It does have some lubricating qualities, but over time it is not a lubricant, it does not serve as one other than at application, and it does not prevent rust. It is often mis-used in applications for which it is not well suited.

Define 'horrible'. Are the tuners hard to turn, does the tuning drift? If so, I would replace with something better. Show the vibrato system usually, it's just a matter of correctly adjusting it.

Mineral spirits is about one refining step beyond gasoline, so no, it won't damage the metal parts. It will clean them, though. I wouldn't use WD-40 on anything that is a bearing surface or a gear.
