Question Modulus Quantum fret buzzzz

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a 1996 Modulus Quantum 5 and want to know what I can do to reduce the fret rattle I get when I pluck a string with some force. The neck is as straight as can be, but I feel like the action may be a little low. Since the neck is graphite with no truss rod, how can I eliminate some of this buzz? Thanks

Raise the strings in small increments until it is gone.

Man, I just hope yours isn't like mine...and quite a few others, where the phenolic layers warped and made the bass darn near unplayable. Not to raise your pulse, but it might be worth a close inspection. Good luck...

How would I know if this was the case? Is it apparent to the naked eye? Everything looks perfect, and the buzz is only present when I attack the string hard. Thanks

If it's there, you'll be able to see it - look closely at the layers for separation and/or warpage. Hopefully yours is fine...as mentioned, just raise the action at the bridge to see if the problem goes away. Good luck.

Looks like mine is in good shape... thank Krishna! I'll try raising the strings at the bridge and see what happens. I appreciate the help!

I almost forgot to ask (this question is for anyone who's had a problem with a Modulus neck)... what caused the neck to warp? Atmosphere? I need to know so I can avoid it at all costs! Thanks!

Don't know but its a good question. I have another graphite necked bass (no truss rod) coming in this week and would like to avoid these problems in the future. AFAIK, graphite composite is supposed to remain relatively stable despite fluctuations in temperature, humidity, etc....but with limitations. I sure wouldn't leave it in a hot car for hours on end!
