Talking More "grind" from setup

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,
I have an American Deluxe Jazz with Dimarzio Model Js in it wired with 2 series/parallel switches.
I also have a MIM Jazz V that has Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Vs in it
Both basses are strung with SIT Rock Brights

I have been playing the MIM jazz for so long and really like the fact that the notes have some fret grind when I play notes. Sort of has a little bit of a Rick kinda sound (sort of).

I love this USA Deluxe Jazz... But I kind of miss having that bright grind to the notes (especially on my low E). It sounds really clean and crisp, and the frets almost have no noise to them at all. (this goes for unamped as well) I am assuming this is what they were going for? Also the open strings sound significantly different from the other notes since there is seemingly no attack to them whatsoever, just a lot of dark body to the sound. I had the bass professionally set up, and I know the luthier lowered the nut slots and made the neck straighter.

My question is: is there any way through setup to get fret grind into my sound with this USA bass? Would getting my frets crowned with this in mind give me the grind that I miss? I like having a bit of a dirty sound.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! I appreciate all responses.

if the bass was dressed well and is set up properly, all you need to do is lower your action. if everything is as i outlined, you can get them literally all over the frets and still produce tone. a high fret kills that though.
