Musicman SR5 Neck Issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. I have been playing my P-bass for a month now leaving my SR5 hanging on my wall looking as beautiful as ever. Today I picked it up to give it some lovin. I noticed the action was crazy high and when I run my hand down the side of the neck I feel the fret ends poking out.

Has anyone dealt with this problem? Any info would be very helpful.

Thanks, Bob
Im not worried about the action, I'm sure it needs a set up from the cold weather. Its the fret wire I'm worried about.

Funny, I had the EXACT same issue with my sterling. I called up a tech friend of mine who is more inclined with this stuff and he said the dry winter can play havoc on unfinished necks (re: EBMM) and it tends to cause fret sprout. He said he usually just corrects the action and files down the fret edges.

I'm slowly building up the confidence to do mine but will likely practice on my MIM P first.

Thanks bro. I wonder if there is any way to prevent this. Like keep it in its case for the winter months?

Its the humidity so maybe keep it in a case with one of those case humidifiers? But even then, winter is gonna happen EVERY YEAR, and where I am (Ottawa Canada) it can last a while. Just take it to a good shop and get it done once, then, in theory you should never see it happen again. Just tweak your truss.
