Musicman Stingray repair question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

As I'm sure everyone's aware musicman stingray necks are very fragile and are easily dented.

I've recently gigged quite a lot and put a lot of dents in my stingray's neck and was wondering if it's possible to fix this kind of damage?

Has anyone else had experience of this kind of thing?

Happy new year!

If it's a dent in the wood and not a chip try the following...Take a damp rag or cloth. Put it over the dent. Take an iron and heat the damp cloth. In most cases the steam created will pull most if not all of the dent out. Good luck.

They're maple. Are you saying that EBMM maple is more fragile than other maple?

well i manage to put a dent in the stingray fretboard with simply my fingernail...

Does no-one else think that the stingray neck is 'soft'?

the damage is like this:

1) I've put several of little dinks in the back of the neck so it feels bumpy when you slide your hand down the neck (which annoys and affects my playing)
2) I've put a dent in the fretboard

Can a guitar shop fix this or does it need a more specialised repair?

Dude. Cut your fingernails and stop trying to throttle the poor thing.

I'm not so sure 'everyone' is aware that maple is 'fragile' nor 'easily dented'.

But the trick with the damp cloth and iron does work if the dents aren't too deep.

And remind me not to loan you a bass, eh?

this isn't helpful

All i would please like to know is if neck damage in general can be repaired?

Also, do musicman stingray necks need looking after with special oil or something like?

I'm sorry that i keep going on...it's just annoyed me how much damage I've done

I think this is going to be your best bet.

Right, well, see where your sense of humor is off to.

Yes, neck damage "in general" can be repaired unless it's too deep. See the suggestion about a damp cloth and an iron? It works. I've done it. Just don't, you know, burn the thing up.

Gunstock oil is your friend. Easy to apply and it will, to some extent, protect the wood.

thanks for the advice
but seriously, does the fact that the stingray's neck is unfinished make it more vulnerable?

It's not unfinished. It comes with an oil and wax finish, which is very thin and makes the neck feel fabulous.

But it will wear off and it is a good idea to occasionally reapply it.

The oil and wax just isn't as hard as lacquer is going to be.

Check the FAQ section of the Ernie Ball site, it has lots of answers to your neck care questions. Searching this site will yield results on it also.

Everyone else is right about the ironing of the dents also.

I don't have the same problem with my Stingray, you must be playing very hard or very weird (seeing as how you're fingernails are digging into the fingerboard), or have a totally messed up neck.
