Cant say for sure, but it seems to be a dead solder somewhere in the electronics. Checking the solders/redoing them well could solve the problem.

If you're talking about your Fender Precision bass with the tone cranked, there you go.

Shield it.

Hi,
It's probably a sore ground connection from the bridge to ground in the electronics.

Actually, it's a fretless SX, and it hums when I crank the highs. If i'm not playing, it hums until I touch the strings, or if I place my finger on the input jack cable. How much does it cost to have the ground done, is it expensive? How much is shielding?

I just logged on to bring up this very topic! My Ric is doing exactly the same thing. I'm going to inspect the solder joints tonight.

If you're not technically inclined, like me, and you got a repair man to do it, what is a ball park figure he would charge for grounding and sheilding?

I can't really answer to how much it would cost because I generally do my own setups/repairs on stuff, but shielding a Jazz isn't all that difficult; it just takes a bit of patience. There's was a very well-done sticky (?) here on the Forum showing step by step how to do it for about $10, but it seems to have vanished! Anyone know where it went?

EDIT: Wait... I found it. Here it is:

Jazz Shielding Pictorial (Big Images Warning)

Think about it.

If the humming stops when he touches the strings, the ground connection to the bridge is fine.

Shield your bass, and ensure you wire it in a star ground configuration.

That's exactly what I'm gonna tell the repair guy!
