My nut is too short!

I bought a Mighty Mite Jazz neck a while ago, and the nut slots are too deep. When I have my strings tuned up normally with the string wrapped up, the strings just sit freely inside the nut without pressing down on the nut like how it should. Now, I have to wind the strings down the tuners in order have the strings at the angle that they should be with a good nut. I'm going to buy a new nut, and I'm unsure about what to get. Pre-slotted, or blanks that come in a set of two. If I get the Pre-slotted, would it be the same as the nut that I have now and be too deep? I don't trust my self with slotting and trimming a nut myself either.

A picture would help. Without a picture it sounds like you need a string tree... but for all 4 strings? I don't see a new nut making any difference. If you're that far away from having a decent break angle currently then a different nut with slots a few hundredths of an inch shallower isn't going to make any difference.

That's the way strings are supposed to be wound around the tuners. What were you doing before?
