| It depends. How high is the action when fretting the first fret?
Generally speaking, you're best off lowering the bridge saddles first. If that doesn't accomplish the task, look at the relief in the neck.
If the saddles are as low as they can go, the strings are buzzing, but the action is still too high at the first fret, your nut should probably be filed a little. If you're at this point, I'd recommend taking it to a professional.
