neck for bass built from parts

Sign in to disble this ad
So basically over the last summer holiday I put together a bass from parts. I'm very pleased with the finished results but there are a couple of things I want to change.

The first is that the neck I used was just one I took from an old Peavey starter bass and so it's pretty crap; it's not finished well so its rough on your hands and the frets are very rough aswell, plus its very hard to adjust the truss rod. So I want to buy a good quality neck to put on it but don't know what make I should go for or where I can get one. My other bass is a MIM Fender p-bass and I love the neck on that so something like that would be ideal. Also I'm a girl so have pretty small hands so something a bit smaller than a p-bass neck might be good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

heres the bass:

I used to own a Fender Jaguar. Loved the neck, a mix between a P and a J. Hated the weight and unbalanced design, but it played great.

Just my opinion but the neck is something I would not skimp on. I would save my pennies and buy what you really know is a quality unit for many reasons. The "feel" of the Bass is influenced deeply by the neck and it's design. A quality neck is in many areas an "investment". Fret design has a major impact on the ability to maintain an action. A graphite neck is a good choice for steep changes in humidity. Occasionally high quality necks are sold off from Basses that been ruined; yet the neck was saved.
There are many opportunities to get a great deal on a higher quality neck; bringing the sum of the instrument to a higher level. Taking your time and hunting will yield something of exceptional value.

I was thinking about getting a graphite neck, how to they compare when playing with them against a wooden neck? I mean are they harder on your fingers etc.

If that Peavey neck fits solidly in the pocket of the body you might consider having a professional fret job and set up done. IME Peavey makes a good straight and most of all solid neck as any company in the musical instrument business. You'd save some money too.

You could probably find a used p-bass neck in the TB classifieds or e-bay. Or you could look at a company like Warmoth which has a lot of different necks depending on budget. If your neck is straight a good bass tech could do so work on it to make it more playable for less than a new neck like Cark Dark mentioned.

budget isn't massive tbh so getting work done on the current neck for the time ebign sounds like a good option. But I live in the middle of nowhere so there aren't any around here that I know of :/

I have only played one bass with a graphite neck so I am very far from an expert. But I did find it solid (slapped well) & had a unique feel that was pleasant. It was on a builder like what you're doing & the project came out quite well.

I've got 2 basses that both have allparts necks on them. Great quality.

is status graphite the only place to get a hold of graphte necks?

I noticed theres a graphite bass in the local guitar shop so I'm going to go and try it out this weekend. Also I think warmouth might have pretty expensive shipping to the Uk so I dont know if thats a realistic option.
