Take it to a good service tech as it's impossible to diagnose it over the net.
Or return it if it's still under warranty.

Good luck!

Chances are your trus-rod may be messed up/broken. If you've never adjusted your trus-rod, then do.

It's totally all rite to adjust it, you're not gonna break it that easily. Sparingly of course during the adjustment. And if the trus-rod is broken, bring it to a luthier and get it changed.

Good luck

Truss rod, you mean? Yep, take it to a tech and get it adjusted.

BTW, to everyone about the soundgears: I TOLD YOU SO!

Well I have a '96 SDGR fiver and have found that simply hitting the top of the neck near the headstock will stop any fretbuzz usually. I've never had to conventionally 'adjust' the truss rod... I've set the action up pretty low and it's ok so just trying hitting the back of the neck with the flat of your palm near the first couple of frets. Ony try it as a last resort though!!! I cannot be held responsible for any breakages occuring due to my suggestion

What you are describing is an impact adjustment.

It's not what I would recommend as a repair procedure, though.

is it normal to have to adjust the truss rod after a few years or is that the sign of a poorly made bass?

poor setup by the store i'd say...

although it's perfectly possible that the truss-rod loosened by the vibration...

Necks naturally bend when the weather changes.(ie. the humidity). It generally has nothing to do with it being poorly made. Some people adjust thier necks every week, while some don't adjust it till it becomes unplayable.
