Question Neck bent from leaning against wall (in just one night)???

Sign in to disble this ad
Is it possible for a neck to bend enough to notice buzzing on the 1st - 5th frets, just from leaning it against a wall for one night? I brought a Spector Euro 4 LX yesterday, and when I tride it out at the music shop, as well as when I get home it was fine. I don't have a stand handy (left it at my last gig, oops!), so in the meantime I've been lying my otehr bass on a bed. Last night about 11pm, I leant my new Spector up against the wall, in it's gigbag, reversed so the strings are facing the wall. This was only meant to be for a short time (like no more than 30-mins) while I got some jobs done, however I forgot all about it and fell asleep.

I wake up the next day about 12 or so hours later (I was very tired!), and all 4 strings are buzzing from the 1st to 5th frets, particularly on the A. I've managed to loosen the truss rod and the problem is now solved thankfully, but I really must ask, could this really be all because the bass was leant against the wall for half a day??? I didn't think it could make that much of a difference in that time frame, albeit I did expect something I must admit (just not 5 frets woprth of buzzing).

My guess would be that the humidity in your house and the music shop were just too different.

Ah I hadn't thought of this! At the moment my thermometer says the humidity here is 39%, I wonder what it was last night. I didn't realise such a change in humidity would do this, but now you guys suggest it it makes sense.

Thanks for your help

Loosen your truss rod a little, and that should take care of it. When it buzzes below the 5th fret and nowhere else that means there is not enough relief (backbow).

I used to leave my bass against a wall every night to bring it to school the next day, it was fine. Although this from Sept-Jan. in Canada.
