| Neck / body connection on sqeire 70's mod jazz bass

when i set this bass between my knees and put my ear to the neck and pluck the E string or any other string for that matter, i get a very strong tone. sounds very mettallic and solid. however, when i do the same w/ my ear against the body, it is very muffled w/ about 2/3rds the volume. is there a problem possibly concerning the body/neck connection. my main reason for asking is that no matter what strings i put on it, the E strings seems like it is covered w/ a wet blanket. any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
