Question Neck finish wrinkles?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

Last year my Kubicki developed this odd textured feel on the back of the headstock to first fret. It is barley visible and impossible to take a photo of but you can feel that its there. Its just slightly textured and not smooth like the rest of the neck, as if there are tiny tiny wrinkles or something. I noticed it after going back to school with my bass after winter break but I can't figure out what caused it. The climates and humidity are similar in both areas and it was inside a vehicle the entire time.

Anyway I contacted Phil Kubicki and didn't get a reply. I know it has been a year but I'm considering selling the bass now and would like to know if anyone knows whats going on or if its easily fixable.

Thanks

Are we talkin' the Ex-Factor with 37 piece laminated neck? IIRC, Phil was moving his operations to NH or some other maple syrup producing state.

It's a custom kubicki ex-factor yes.

Okay, the 37 laminates expand / contract at different rates causing the "ripple" effect you describe....they're notorious for it. Phil offers a "rehab" program whereas he levels the neck contour and re-seals. Might want to try calling him again. You may be able to reduce the ripple with some #0000 steel wool. Be sure to tape off the pickups.

I don't know if it would be worth shipping my bass across the boarder for the rehab.

Steel wool eh? Sounds dangerous haha.

I'll contact him again. Thanks for the tips.

Any tech worth his salt should be able to pull off the same repair. One of the pitfalls of multi-lam necks.
