 Neck Finishing Questions

I know that there's a lot of talk about going to a nitro or lacquer or epoxy finish on necks - and this might also apply to the bodies too - but has anyone had any guitar finishing experience with products like "Bar-Top" or Marine-Grade Polyester Resin?
I refinished an old piano with bar-top many years ago and it was tough, hard and beautiful. Same with polyester resins, as I built a few of my own surfboards when I was active in that sport.
I once built a waterbed frame and polyester coated it and it was a nice surface too.
