| Neck and new J bass body??????

I have an old, bass, my very first one, that im looking to salvage the neck from and replace it with a Signature Jass Bass 62 RI. There are several problems im running into...
1.Im not sure what kind of bass it is. it doesnt have any serial numbers or any writing. the only righting is on the scroll that says "state of the art" which doesnt mean anything. im pretty sure its a P bass though because it has the same dimensions.
2.Is it possible for me to refinish the neck? i have some satin finish that i was thinking about putting on it. can i just sand the old finish off, leaving the frets on, paint over the scroll, and just apply the satin finish?
3.Im kinda sceptical about doing this. im worried that ill buy this new body and the neck wont work out, so then i may need to spend another 300 bucks on a new neck which may not even work either. is it pretty straight forward?
