Neck for project P bass? So I'm thinking about finding a loaded P style body and the finishing out the build. So my question is: what's the best option for a neck (loaded or unloaded)? I know about warmoth ( a little pricey) and mighty mite - are their necks finished and ready to go or are they bare and need some finishing? This would be my first project so any advice would be awesome!! HEEELLLPP!! |
I have a Mighty Mite on my main bass, and it's a very nice. They come with a thin satin finish which I like the feel of, but - just a warning - it's worn through in some places, down to bare wood. Only a few small spots though. Otherwise, they're perfectly nice; mine doesn't have any noticeable high frets or problems, the maple is very nice and has a light, even color to it. The rosewood board is pretty dark and also has nice grain. |
What about their fretless necks? Do they have a maple fretless or just ebanol? And do their necks have the nut installed and the notches cut? |

The nut comes installed and slotted; it's nothing fancy and the material's not high-grade stuff (seems to be just plain corian on mine), but I haven't had any problems or had a need to have work done to it. I would definitely buy another one for my next project. Also, not to start a firestorm, but my guitarist bought a Warmoth neck for his Strat, and it was pretty expensive, even completely unfinished. The wood doesn't look very nice, and it needed fretwork and some nut work directly from them. |
Excellent. Thanks for the info! |
Yes Mighty Mite makes good necks. |
Another for mighty mites. I have a maple/maple jazz neck from them on my P bass and love it. And the finish has broken through in one spot, but I don't really mind:P |
Thanks guys! Looks like mighty mite is a winner! Do you know what size the tuner holes are cut or what tuners fit in them? |
I know GFS/wilkinson tuners fit in them. Squier tuners do too. The sizes of these tuners? I don't know haha. I've gotten lucky with buying tuners that don't specify. |
Does anyone know if Schaller tuners will work on MM necks? |
I like the MIM and MIJ vintage reissue necks. Not quite cheap but good quality wood and good finish (poly gloss of course). Note that this explicitly excludes the "MIM standard" line. |
Never been a fan of gloss finished necks. |

If you want satin any random MIM standard would do and they can be very cheap. Or a neck from one of those MIJ Fernandez. |
