Neck refinishing Questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I have a KSD bass which I have heavily modified.I'm trying to replicate the sound of my maple neck 74 Fender Jazz(Marcus Miller).I'm very close. The Fender is just a little brighter sounding acoustically.
One thing I have not done is a neck refinish.
The Fender neck has a heavy polyester type finish(I think).
Would that be the reason why it's a bit brighter?
My KSD has a very thin satin type finish. The back of the neck is reshaped and now has just a couple of coats of linseed oil.
Could I refinish that neck with the frets in?
What type of finish might be close to what Fender was using in the 70s?
Would the give me a little extra zing?

I doubt it would change the sound at all. And I've discovered that acoustic sound doesn't make much of a difference at all when it's plugged in. What would truly give you that extra zing is for your bridge pickup to be closer to the bridge on your KSD, as that's how 74 Fenders were made.

I've already checked the pickup locations for the KSD compared to the Fender. The bridge pickup is where it is supposed to be but the neck pickup had ti be moved forward a bit.
I do have a Moon JB 5 where the bridge pickup is too far forward, but I've hesitated to move it back because of the permanent scar it would leave.
