Neck screw holes are too big

Sign in to disble this ad
So I recently bought a new neck from Samsguitarshop online. I just don't have the money to drop on a warmoth neck, so I found pretty cheap neck online, it had lots of good reviews. I received it and the holes on the neck are too big, they would probably fit a 10 1-3/4 screw, maybe I am just blind, but I have no been able to find a screw that size. So any suggestions out there? I wrote "Sam" and this was his response, "Probably a good idea to dowel the neck holes and re-drill, for any neck, to ensure a tight fit. All Strat spec holes are slightly different."

but surely the holes wouldnt be so much bigger to warrant the use of screw inserts.
maybe if the holes were stripped or something?
id just go fatter screws, it would be cheaper and easier.

I would try the toothpicks/wood glue tricks before, especially if it's a cheap neck.

if the holes are already bigger, $2 for a set of larger wood screws from local hardware store.

Threaded inserts require machine screws.

Screw inserts worked. But holy **** was it confusing, and if it wasn't such a cheap neck I'd be upset at myself. BUT! If I ever do this again it will be a breeze!

Well, congratulations on a successful repair! Most inexperienced folks(I'm assuming you're one) would have screwed it up. Pun intended?

Well done. #10 sheet metal screws would probably have worked fine, btw.

hows the neck then?
I got a cheap maple fretboard neck a few years ago on ebay, $3.60, ill type that again $3.60 . I was the only other bidder, .99c auction etc, and it proved to be an okay neck. The frets were thin, it went on about 3 or so different projects, and it ended up that i threw it out. lol. shoulda kept it.

I am not inexperienced, but I am new. I sure wish I had found those sheet metal screws, I guess I didn't try very hard. I have not strung up the bass yet, I also just copper shielded the cavity and am waiting on new potentiometers to come in the mail. 3.60? thats insanely cheap, I got this one on ebay from samsguitarshop for 50. It looks nice, but we will see how it is strung up. I don't imagine its gonna be that great of a neck or it would be more popular.
