Neck side strap button issues

Sign in to disble this ad
I've switched the strap buttons on my bass to the Gripper ones from Stewmac. However, the neck side is giving me some trouble. I've tried the toothpick and wood glue method, but the screw just doesn't seem to have anything to bite into. After a certain point it just keeps turning without going any deeper into the hole. What else should I try?

Dumb question but....how deep is the screw hole and how long is the screw?

I've used a) multiple toothpicks with marine epoxy, b) golf tees, c) wood dowel. If this has been a recurring problem, I'd probably go the dowel / glue route and re-drill the silly thing.

Try really filling the hole with either wooden matchsticks or toothpicks, then get a new screw that is about 3/8"-1/2" longer than the old one. Then put superglue on the threads of the screw and crank her down. I like to use the synthetic black washers(small) the type you use when putting units in a rackmount, between the straplock and the guitar body. It keeps the wood from getting indented, and it looks fine too.
