Neck Swap...DIY????

Sign in to disble this ad
I have searched on here and found some info, however what I am specifically looking for I have not found. I currently have a SX SBJ-75 and would like to swap on a P neck. I emailed Kurt at Rondo Music and he replied that the P neck iis just slightly larger than the J neck and would require some filing. Other than that, is swapping the neck something that is DIY-able? I have good woodworking skills, but am nervous about not being able to get the thing set up right after swapping. Thanks

If by "larger" Kurt means "wider" then it is not much of a problem if you have good skills. The important thing to remember is that the modifications should be made to the body, not to the neck. It is typical to remove material from both sides of the pocket. If it is only a few thousandths then it is an easy procedure. If a bit more is required then the top of the pocket is to be beveled with a file and the side of the pocket is pared away with a ridiculously sharp chisel using the top of the bevel as a guide line. It shouldn't be much more than a sixty-fourth of an inch, but there are others on this board who have dealt with this particular installation. They should chime in before the weekend is over.

Good luck.

BTW, if by good woodworking skills you mean that you know how to frame a house, then you might want to take this one to a pro.
