Neck wood For MIM Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Newbie here, I've been learning much about the debate about different woods. Here I am yet another person wanting to mod out there MIM Jazz with warmoth stuff. However, I could'nt find anyone's opinion about what type of neck wood would counter act the muddy aspect of poplar/alder that's most likely on these cheaper basses. Any links or suggestion?

Can someone send me a link to a poll or review? Can't seem to find anything specifically addressing this. I check out moses graphite necks and fo sho that'll counter act the situation, but what about wenge on mim Jazz, bubinga ebony etc. I know maple will be straight forward but what would be warm yet modern and slapable to walkable. Anyone?

How about go and play some MIM basses and see if you like them? Theres nothing muddy or cheap about my MIM Jazz bass. It sounds great, even with the stock mexican pickups, and the neck feel is to die for. Even with a rosewood fretboard, it's got plenty of clarity. Step away from the computer, go outside, smell the fresh air, and go to a music store and play some basses.

I'm actually a young professional. Muscal Theatre, jazz, church, teacher, student etc, and life is good. I have an upright and Tobias 6 string with barts that plays like a buttery dream. However, there were a couple recording session I did that if I just had a no nonsence fender around the it would have been sweeter. I'll most likely go get a high end jazz but looking at this sight a seeing all the frankensteins or franken-jazzes inspires me to make a freek-a-ziod of my own but not an abomination. So I guess going for something unique yet kicks butt. =)

Well, Fender puts a maple neck on just about every bass they build and that's one of the brightest sounding woods there is. If you want a snappier tone in an MIM, get the FSR from Musicians Friend with the ash body. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ass?sku=517887

Here's a great resource for wood knowledge: http://www.warmoth.com/bass/necks/ne...itar_neckwoods

Modding an inexpensive Fender really is a lot of fun. Have a look at mine. Check Out My NEW JAZZ!!!!

Hope this helps!

Your bass is awesome and got good reviews too. For the studio I think an higher end MIA jazz with active seymores with BA II bridge will do the trick.

...and the quest for my own franken-jazz goes on.

I couldn't really see the bass, but those were cool pics. The BA II is cool, but I've heard really good things about the Schaller 2000. You might check that out too.
