Need basic "repair" help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I have been out of the gear-fixing aspect of owning basses for a looooong time, and I couldn't find what I need by using the "search" function on this site.

Here's what I need help with:

The E string on my Epiphone Ripper sounds dead - it used to have nice ring to it, but now it sounds like it is about to break. But the string is less than 3 months old. I practice onkly 2-3 times a week, and strings last me much longer than 3 months. What could be wrong to make this string sound so dead?

On the same basss, the D string's intonation is off. When I play the 12th fret harmonic then put my finger on the fret, the resulting note is off. (Not sure if it is sharp or flat.) How would I adjust the intonation for just this string? The others are fine, and I am afraid I may do more harm than good without advise.

I have more troubles with my Fender Jazz bass. I bought it used, and I need to ground the bass. It hums/buzzes when plugged into an amp. How would I ground the bass?

I want to raise the strings a little bit, and the A string has terrible buzz - not electronic - the string buzzes when played. Is the string too deep into its groove in the nut?

Finally, ALL the strings are a little off when I do the "12th fret intonation" trick. What is wrong - a warped neck or intonation?
(I've never been too good at spotting a mild warp in a neck.)

Thanks, all! I feel like such a newb!

Hard to say, especially for someone as noobish as myself lol (no joke there, btw). Good luck, and I'm sure some more knowledgeable people will chime in soon.

I suggest finding a guitar tech who'll be able to take of these problems for you without too much trouble. IME, these are pretty straight forward problems with easy fixes (if you have the experience).

Shouldn't be too expensive.

If you post where you're located, maybe one the TB'rs can recommend a tech in your area.

Thanks for the help, all.

I was hoping to do the repairs myself, but it seems like it will be best to take the basses to the local music store and get their repair guru to do the work
