Need a bass guru in Arkansas

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok I know this is a wild stab in the dark, BUT...anybody know a good bass repair/tech person in Arkansas? I have several basses that need serious attention..not luthier type stuff, just electronics and set-up. I hate to admit this but I have been playin bass for 20 yrs, and I still cant set-up the action on my basses worth a damn...it drives me nuts Little tweaks here and there with the bridge and truss rod, yeah I can handle it, but all the "techs" for 100 miles around me are guitarists...and they just dont get it. Last time I thought I'd found a good guy, so I took 3 basses in to have them set-up and strings put on, and I got all 3 back with action that was worse than I sent them in with. And, No...I dont need to read the stickys and watch the videos...been there, got the migraine.
Its been MANY years since I've had a good tech...and he up and moved away on me.
I know theres probably 10 people on this forum from Arkansas, but I just had to ask for help from you guys....thanks!

Hey dude, I'm in LR and was just wondering where these techs you tried were from. BTW you are the first person from AR that I have run into on this forum. I'll help if I can.

I know it would be quite a hike for you, but if you ever find yourself in Nashville, TN on tour with your basses, I'd be more than happy to set them up for you. I have a repair shop here on the south side of town. As a fellow TB'er, I could do them all same day in case you are heading out of town quickly. I know it's probably not the answer you were hunting for. Hope it helps.

Ben Jack's Guitars in Fayetteville http://www.benjacks.com/, is the closest a Google search can do. That looks like 100+ miles one way. At least he advertises luthier's & repairs.

It's a definite Road Trip. Do you Fish? When does the season open in Arkansas? Any special fishing spots NW of you? 8-)

I have been in Ben Jacks many times, its an hour and half from me but I get to Fayetteville often....thanks though, they ALL say they can set-up basses and do repairs...which is the running joke.
I was just looking for local bass players that might "know a guy".

Sorry, I don't fish

Talk to Doug / dcr. He may be able to recommend somebody in the greater Little Rock area. Also the best take-out joints for fried possum.

Nothing like reinforcing a stereotype, eh?

"dcr" is Doug's TB handle. Do a member search, send him a PM, and tell him Riis sent you. He lives in Malvern (poor man's Pine Bluff) and knows the local resources.

I don't know anyone that does any work either - I do my own, but wouldn't feel comfortable doing it for someone else. You could contact Mr. Majestic here on TB - he's in Conway. He (at least use to) sell swamp ash body blanks to a few builders. He might know someone local.

are you shooting down the GC suggestion just because it's GC? have you gone in and met the person that does setups?

honestly, what's the worst that could happen if you let them setup one of your basses?

have you already tried them?

We have 2 GC's in Arkansas...both are 100 miles away...why would I drive that far to be completely disappointed, as I know I would be. No I dont know the punks behind the GC counter, but if their product knowledge and the way they (mis)treat their guitars and basses is indicative of their work..I will pass. I have yet to be impressed with anything about the GC's in Arkansas, sorry.
No offense to GC employees on this forum. I do not want to get into a pi$$in' match with anyone on here. As I stated before, Im lookin for someone who knows THAT GUY that understands the difference between setting up a bass, and a guitar and doesnt just slap the strings on, look down the neck, check the intonation, and charge me for it.
There are very few music stores in western Arkansas...I have been to almost all of them and inquired. I would gladly drive 2 hours for quality work if I knew I was going to get quality work..which is why I asked for a referral..not a phone number and address from the yellow pages.
PS....I did call the GC's when I was looking for EMG pickups for 2 of my basses, and to have them installed...they acted like I had balls for brains, and one decided he wanted to argue with me that I had a "Schecter" bass...not a "Spector" bass..when I insisted he look up Spectors, he said..Oh yeah, thats what I meant....I thought they were called Schecters.

Yep...welcome to my world.

i'm just trying to be helpful. i found this:
http://www.independentmusicservice.com/aboutus.html

they don't specialize in doing bass guitars, but they may have the name of someone who does. it couldn't hurt to call 'em.

peace,
joe
