Need to file my strings, help please!

It's too thick at the base of the string where it sits in the peg on the end of the bass....i was told by a good friend that I should file it, as that's what he has to do for his........how exactly should I file it? Can anyone clue me in? Thanks alot

Do not file the string.
I think your friend was refering to filing the slot that holds the string. It's not a big job, if you've done it before. If you haven't done it before, get some help or take it to your local music store where they'll probably do it on site.

Alright cool, but how would I go about obtaining a file? Will a standard metal file work? I could take it in, but I don't see walking into a Sam Ash and expecting someone to be just chilling with a file ready to go............

This is done with a "nut file". Search this forum with those words (nut file) and you'll see what's involved (widening the nut slots). Also called a 'nut job' but that can get confusing...

I searched the open interwebs for "nut job" and I don't want anyone doing that to my bass!
