Sign in to disble this ad
hey everyone, I'm building a whamola, and I would like to know what kind of P-pickups I should use, and also what kind of bridge, nut, hardware, etc I should use and where to get them. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Wow....that's pretty wide open so far...here's a few questions:

What type of sould are you looking for?

Can you post a pic?

Hardware?...post a pic, we'll find you something nice.

I use a bone nut, but there is also plastic, wood, graphite, brass, and a few others....brass gives you nice sustain on open strings....I have always prefered Bone....the Nut on my main Bass, was done by Rene Roy (Roy Custom), he got the bone from a butcher (free) and carved it from there....did a wicked job!...that was 14 years ago.

As for pups, there is a few awesome stickys in the pup section, cool comparisons and reviews...one of my favourite sections here.

4 strings?...."Do The BartMan".....Bartolini

Let's start there...

Well, there's not much to see, it's a hollow steel pipe with a piece of wood on it...
But anyway, I'm not looking for a specific sound, and I don't think the sound can be much different if I'm going to beat the crap out of it with a drumstick. I don't know if I should get a regular P-pickup set and cut one off, or to get a single coil P pickup.
As for the nut, I doubt bone, plastic, or wood will be able to handle the wear and whammy-ing from the roundwound strings, so I'd say brass is my top choice.
And for pick-ups, I don't want to spend too much money, and as long as I can get a pickup (and of course, a volume control and output jack), it's fine.

Another question, what's the maximum distance between the string and the pickup in order for the pickup to pick up the sound?

Ok, just noticed it was a whamola you mentioned...there are lots of good websites with guys experiments and findings, google....

I would look for a local guitar pro/tech, they usually have old pups lyin around...

Post sound clips when you're done please
