With all due respect to dcbluesbass, I adapted his thread title because it is better than anything I can come up with.

I have a couple of basses that are in dire need of a professional setup. Anywhere in the Glenview/Evanston/Skokie area would be ideal.

I took some of his classes and was very impressed with him (Ian) and his staff, and their processes.

Minstrel Music in Niles
8049 N Milwaukee Ave Niles, IL 60714-2827 - (847) 965-2550
Never had a setup by them, but I know they are a full service shop.

One other shop whose owner I've completely forgotten the name of -- not sure if he was just getting a new business started, but nice guy, and worth a shot. I remember his address:
6210 Madison Ct, Morton Grove, IL 60053
I'll try to find his card and post that.

I know Evanston has a guitar shop that's been around forever too.

And there's a guy on the south side, I think, that advertises on craigslist, offering setups are a pretty good price. Might be a good option.

Cheers!

Servicing instruments is our specialty, and since 1974 we've maintained a full shop and in-house repair department. We have the Midwest's only Plek Machine. We are an authorized Fender & Gibson repair center and with two experienced technicians, we are capable of any repair, refinishing or customization any guitar could ever need. Not sure what's wrong with your guitar? Stop in, Call us or E-mail ourGuitar Tech for a diagnosis. Just type in a full description of your guitar and what the problem is- we are always glad to help.

No matter what is wrong with your guitar you can be sure it is safe with one of our 2 qualified technicians.

George MacPhail: Better known as "The Doctor", has been tinkering with guitars since the early 1960's and has worked at The Music Gallery since 1975. George has personally repaired or adjusted over 20,000 instruments. Considered to be a walking encyclopedia, George has forgotten more than most will know!

Chip Jurkovac: Starting at Dean Guitars in 1980, Chip participated in all aspects of guitar construction. After honing his skills in parts installation, set-ups and fret leveling he moved on to the finishing department. In 1986 Chip left the Dean Guitar Co. to work in the finishing department of Hamer Guitars where he would stay for 2 years. In 1988 Chip joined The Music Gallery staff as our main Repair Tech and after 19 years is still going strong with several thousand happy customers. His abilities range from the best setups around to immaculate fretwork, refinishing, rewiring, you name it! The other guys at the store are pretty capable of handling most of their own work, but they are more than willing to have Chip work on their guitars.

Thanks Folks. Will definately be checking these out.

lethargytartare: Was it Guitar Works Ltd in Evanston you were thinking of? I used to do all my business there, but I had a super-nasty experience with one of the guys in the repair ship.

Took my Jazz Bass in for a setup, and when I got it back (a hour later) I got to pay $70 for my bass that was in the exact condition it was in when I took it in...save for it being restrung with mismatched strings (E,D and G GHS Boomers and a DR High Beams A) they "had lying around"

Needless to say. I haven't returned.

Hey I realize this maybe a little out of your way but Music Solutions in Bolingbrook is amazing! I had the guy (Ithink his name was Jim) completely take apart my old banged up US Spector NS4 refinish it and set it up for a hundred bucks. And it practically looked like brand new when he was done. His typical setups are $25 plus the cost of strings and are the best I've found around. Hope this helps! http://www.musicsolutionsstore.com/index.php
