Negative effects of having a neck with no/little relief?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, i love how my bass feels when i basically have this much : ' relief on it. Now, as long as the string moves while i am checking my relief (the whole 15th fret first fret deal) then my neck is straight and i dont have backbow right? I heard that having backbow can cause your frets to loosen up and pop up over time, dont want that to happen yeah :/.

Don't worry about any damage caused by too little relief. Loosening of frets and popping them out is a nonsense IMO.

The worst thing that can happen is a serious buzzing during playing.

A good setup guide is here.

Just wanted to point out the other articles in the sticky section of this forum. The Gary Willis method used to be include there but has since been pulled ???

In a recent thread, a number of knowledgeable TBers questioned the value of the Gary Willis method and suggested it be un-stickied. The moderator agreed, and *poof*. A quick search failed to find the exact thread (perhaps it was in Luthier's Corner?).

edit: Here it is - just took my bass apart to look at the truss rod, what is this?!

I hope not, I set mine to be *just* flat, or *just give a hint* of relief, depending on the bass.

Newer player ( like my sons) dont prefer it that way, too hard for them, so I have the P bass setup with relief, ala Fender. I hate it.

My necks are very straight with barely any relief. Most guy that play my basses say that the action is too low, but for me I like my strings to work with me, not against me.
