Neglected StingRay 5 - Cracked Finish - What to do?

Sign in to disble this ad
Summoning my fellow TBers.

Just got this SR5 off eBay. Nice color and it plays and sounds like the best of them, but the story is that the previous owner was a kid with money that never got to play, so the bass sat unplayed for a few year. . .

The result, the finish has cracked.

What to do? It plays great and the cracks do not bother me visually, but should it strip it? refinish it? or just let it be?

Thanks.

In stripping my jazz bass and applying an oil finish, I noticed a noticable weight savings.

is cracking right in front of me

leave it! it's a part of the bass's history and character. it shouldn't be erased.

Any chance you could post a couple full shots of that bass?

I'd probably just leave it and let the cracks remain as visual flavor.

What to do?

Nothing,

you'll spent a lot to refinish, not worth.
First thing to do is check if the neck is o.k.
If the neck is good and the bass sounds nice I won't bother.

Leave it alone.

Well, play it but leave the finish alone.

Cool bass.

It is a four hundred dollar cosmetic repair when done by a pro. BTW, pros do not paint cars full time and guitars on the side. Anything less than a pro refin will not do it justice. It will look worse than it does now and it doesn't look that bad.

Live with it or trade it.

Another possible option would be to ask EB customer service what your options are with them. Aside from that crack, the finish looks lovely! Any fuller pics?
