New -Better nut for Lakland 55-02 dlx

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm off for a couple weeks, so I figured now is the time to do a couple mods to my Lakland 55-02 Dlx.

In a previous post, I commented on the factory HipShot lic. ultra-lite tuners. They seem "touchy"...meaning: as I'm tuning up, once I get close, it seems like about a 1/16 -1/8 of a turn and I'm too sharp. Someone suggested I replace the factory plastic nut.

Any suggestions? The nut width is: 1.78.

Also, I measured the spacing at the nut with a dial caliper and got the following measurements:

B-E=.338
E-A=.350
A-D=.335
D-G=.322

These are from c/c of strings, directly over the nut.

Is the bottom of my Lakkie nut flat or curved?

Thanks!

I suggest buying a Graphtech TUSQ XL nut blank and take the bass to a tech to file the nut for you, it's the simplest method, and you don't have to worry about measurements... also, not so expensive...

you might be going overboard, here. just get the stock nut filed properly so the strings don't catch in the slots, no need to replace it.

Certainly with the Skyline series of Laklands, I find that the nut material is not my favorite - too soft for my liking. I haven't got around to replacing mine yet, but when I do it will be bone. I have never been convinced that there is a better material for a nut than bone, and I like the fact that it is natural, like the wood of the bass. An organic whole...
