| Not many bassists are familiar with the Godin Freeway, and I agree, it is a surprising bass. I love the neck, the balance, the looks and the quality that goes into it for such a reasonable price. But the pickups, at least in the passive P-J style are a bit thin sounding and the bridge, I think, is another weak link. I like the string through idea but for some reason, on 2 out of 3 Freeways I tried the E string was dead and on the 3rd, marginal. I suspect it's something to do with that sustain block built in and I'd change it if at all possible.
Finding something that will fit might be a problem though. I don't know how other bridges would line up with the strings through holes in the body. Myself, I like the Hipshot bridge I have in my Carvin more than any others I have. The usual thing to try is the Badass and the ones I've tried have all worked well but didn't impress me sound wise as being superior to a lot of others. I like some of the Gotoh bridges I've tried but I'm not up on which models they are. I'd try either the Hipshot from Carvin or one of the Gotoh made heavy Fender type bridges myself.
I almost bought one of the Freeways I tried in Toronto about 3 years ago but decided against it after concluding I'd have to put a couple hundred bucks in upgrades into it. Nice bass though. I loved the maple body which was surprisingly light.
I'd be interested in hearing what you think after replacing the bridge. |
