New bridge on my Godin Freeway 4 ???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I bought myself a Godin Freewat 4 passive bass here on this forum and am very happy with it so far. This is my 'test' bass and my gigging bass for gigs where I lknow some samages can occur.

But, so far, this bass has surprised me a lot actually !!!!

I installed some Nordstrand pickups and these are really hot and have a great output with lots of dynamics.

Now, I want to experiment with another bridge.... what would you recommend, a Badass ??? Anything else ???
What price ???

Let me know your thoughts. I want to experiment with this instrument.

Thanks !

Not many bassists are familiar with the Godin Freeway, and I agree, it is a surprising bass. I love the neck, the balance, the looks and the quality that goes into it for such a reasonable price. But the pickups, at least in the passive P-J style are a bit thin sounding and the bridge, I think, is another weak link. I like the string through idea but for some reason, on 2 out of 3 Freeways I tried the E string was dead and on the 3rd, marginal. I suspect it's something to do with that sustain block built in and I'd change it if at all possible.

Finding something that will fit might be a problem though. I don't know how other bridges would line up with the strings through holes in the body. Myself, I like the Hipshot bridge I have in my Carvin more than any others I have. The usual thing to try is the Badass and the ones I've tried have all worked well but didn't impress me sound wise as being superior to a lot of others. I like some of the Gotoh bridges I've tried but I'm not up on which models they are. I'd try either the Hipshot from Carvin or one of the Gotoh made heavy Fender type bridges myself.

I almost bought one of the Freeways I tried in Toronto about 3 years ago but decided against it after concluding I'd have to put a couple hundred bucks in upgrades into it. Nice bass though. I loved the maple body which was surprisingly light.

I'd be interested in hearing what you think after replacing the bridge.

62Bass,

Yes, indeed the Godin Freeway is an excellent axe.

Without changing everything on it, because I had a good deal on it, I am eager to change and upgrade some parts on it, and the bridge will be the next in line. It is also a way for me to experiment and learn how to repair and set up a bass.

Thanks for the comments on the bridge selection. If I find a good replacement, I will do it for sure !
