Is a new bridge Necessary?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, i am remodeling my Squier P bass, and i am getting a bunch of new stuff as of hardware. And i was wondering is changing the stock bridge really necessary? What would the quality's of a better bridge be? Intonation? I know its a total newby question, and i bet there are a bunch of threads posted asking the same thing. But i thought i might ask anyways.
Thanks,
-Dean

Contentious issue, but I think the stock bridge is fine unless:

1) You prefer the looks of an aftermarket bridge.

2) You pick/pluck hard enough that the stock bridge's saddles move around on you in a way that affects playability.

I don't think you'll get an improvement in intonation or tone from an aftermarket bridge.

I've got a Wilkinson bridge on my P-Bass that looks just like this, except the bridge saddles are brass instead of steel. Sustains just about forever. Got it for $21.99 on eBay a couple of years ago. Your stock bridge should do just fine, though.
