New Bridge: String Spacing

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys,

I am putting a Hipshot A-style bridge on my bass, but I need to know whether to buy the .708" or .750" string spacing model.

According to the Hipshot FAQ:
How do I determine the string spacing of my bass bridge ?

Here is what you need to do. Measure from the center of your highest string to the center of your lowest string. Lets say it is 3.75 inches on a 6 string. You will need to divide this number by the number of spaces between each string. In this case there are 5 spaces. So if the string spread is 3.75, we divide that by 5 and we end up with a string to string spacing of .750.

So, I measured from the low B string to the G string at the bridge of my bass and got 2.56" (2 and 9/16"). I divided that by 4 (number of spaces) and got .641".

Does that seem correct? Would getting the .708" bridge "mess up" the string spacing too much. I know the bridge can adjust the strings 2mm in either direction, but I'm not sure if that's enough to get to .641".

I know my bass has tight string spacing, so maybe thats the issue...?

I appreciate any help or advice you can give me. Thanks!!!

Assuming your math is correct, then no, it won't get you that tight. It would get you around .660 if you can go 2 mm in on each side. But it won't make your spacing too wide for your neck or anything. And you probably wouldn't notice it after a day.
