New knobs?

Sign in to disble this ad
About a week ago I bought a new Ibanez Sound Gear SR300. It was a floor model, so people banged it around a little. I didn't notice at first, but now one of the knobs is loose. (Actually, two knobs: it's a double knob.) A friend took them off with an allen wrench and said he thought the nut holding the post to the body was cross-threaded, plus it's kind of loose.

So I'm taking it back to GC and having them right the whole mess. Probably have them see to a buzz on the D string at around the fourth fret, too.

But here's my real question. While I have it under the knife, should I also have the guy put on higher quality knobs? Maybe if it had sturdier, chunkier hardware on it they wouldn't go loose.

Silly? And if not, got any recommendations?

The knobs are cosmetic more than they are functional. They just sit there and you turn them a few degrees occasionally. "Higher quality" is pretty much meaningless when it comes to knobs...one set may look more attractive to your eye than another. I don't know what the knob configuration is, but you can change them yourself any time.

Just check to make sure you crank the set screw on them every now and then to make sure they don't come loose. I personally don't like Push on knobs for that exact reason. It sounds like you're actually talking about the pot itself when you say "The nut holding the post to the body was cross threaded" that can easily happen when installing a pot. Just make sure it's tight against the inside of the control cavity, and put the nut on nice and flat. Tighten it snug, not enough to screw the finish. Doesn't sound like too big of problems.
