New neck = New problems.

Got a 1991 Fender 62' RI neck that im placing on my MIJ Body, and im finding that the spacing between the edge and the E string is much greater than the spacing between the G and the edge.

Also, the action is annoyingly high. I sighted the neck as 100% flat before i placed it on, and i was going to tighten the truss putting strings on, however it seems to have a nice dip in the middle now.

So I decided to shim the neck upwards 1/32" to make up the difference. I tested the small peice of cardboard by making sure it was the correct height that i wanted, and it worked fine.

Now that i have it shimmed, im looking at still high action, but i cannot go up anymore on the heel because then the strings touch the 21st fret.

The two problems i need to solve are the truss/action, and the string spacing. any ideas on how to go about this?

As far as the spacing goes, you'll have to replace your nut to change that.

With the excessive bow in your neck, you'll need a proper truss rod adjustment. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, you're better off bringing it to a tech.

The spacing is fine at the nut. I measured it.

However its the spacing over the heel and at the pickups that seems off. Its almost like the neck must be pointing downward to make this kind of a change. If the bridge was moved, it would only change which side of the neck that the strings are wrong at the heel.

so my guess is that I'm going to have to point the neck differently to get this going.

as far as the action, i will take the neck off, loosen the truss, clamp it in the position i need it in, and tighten the nut until is tight, and then refit the neck and restring.

My biggest issue is how would i get the neck in the right position so the spacing is correct. I've never seen something like this.

Maybe these links will help:

Remounting a neck

Neck or bridge

These may help.

If there is no way to get the neck to line up then the existing holes may have to be plugged and redrilled to get it to line up correctly.

VERY VERY Helpful.

Gee the MIA 04' HY1 neck fit on so well i never thought that this would be a problem until today.

and i was pretty much figuring that was the issue and the way to attack it. Thanks 202dy!

FIXED!!!

There is a nut problem, which I will need files to fix. 1st fret is impossible to comfortably play.

Congratulations! You should have a sense of accomplishment.

Nut work without files is not much fun. But in a pinch you can wrap some 600 grit wet or dry paper around the shaft of a drill bit that is ~.020" smaller than the string diameter.

Would it not be easier to just shave the nut from the bottom using 400 grit?

Oh. also.. I tried 3 different J-bass nuts, this one is about 1/32" smaller.. and the strings are spaced different. Is this a 62' RI thing?

Ir the nut height is objectionable across the neck then that is the way to go.

Nut spacing is a different animal. Check out

Nut spacing

for a discussion of equal centers vs equal spacing. Edge margins vary, which will vary the string spacing. That said, play anything for thirty days and you'll wonder what all the whining was about in the first place.
