| New neck to a nt bass - possible?

Hi folks,
I have a custom built bass that I really love. The bass has one problem - the neck was built far to thin, 37mm at the nut.
The guy who made it (a friend) offered me to cut off the two body wings and built a new neck for it. The Bass has a very nice poblar burl top (not over the neck)
Is it possible to to so? I am a litte afraid of ruining the bass...
