New nut?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been dealing with wicked fret buzz and have seemed to exhaust all options for a remedy. I've worked on the action, adjusted the truss rod, changed the strings, and then finally got it professionally set up when nothing else worked. When that didn't get rid of the buzz I asked for advice from a friend. They suggested I either get a new nut put on, or put a small piece of paper in the nut under the strings. has anybody heard of this? do you think that would help?

Not enough information for an informed diagnosis, as if an informed diagnosis can be performed on an online forum.

Where does the string buzz? Is the buzz on all strings?

Most importantly, buzzes caused by a low nut are found on the first fret almost exclusively. If the instrument is buzzing elsewhere, so is the problem.

the buzz happens all over the fretboard. i even get a buzz off an open A string. I have a 5 string Traben Array Limited. I've had it for about a month. Aside from the buzzing, whenever I try to tap, say if I'm working on a Primus song or whatnot, I get a dead string sound. What I mean by that is that it buzzes for a split second and then the sound dies. i can't even make out the note from that. The bass has a great feel, so if it's possible to remedy this buzz, I'd like to keep it, but I'm really thinking I'll have to trade it in. If you need any other information, lemme know.

It's not the nut. That much we can tell on the internet.

Still not enough info. Read the sticky at the top of the page labeled Truss Rod Adjustments. Then measure the relief at the seventh fret and the string height at the twelfth. In brief:

String height is measured from the top of the twelfth fret to the bottom of the string. In the US, use 1/64". Others will use metric. At the hardware store you can buy a small rule for less than five dollars that will allow this measurement.

Relief is measured in a shop with a precision straight edge and feeler gauges. Failing that, fret the string at the first fret and the fret where the neck meets the body. Slide a business card between the string and the seventh fret. Does it fit? Will it take two?

Post the information here and someone will help you.
