new p/j pup installation - problem encoutnered

I'm just finishing my first real work on a bass. I took my first ever bass and replaced the stock P/J pickups with a set of EMG's and installed a new Schaller Roller bridge. I also replaced the P Pickup Volume pot. There are 4 pots (P pups have 1Vol + 1Tone, J pup has 1Vol + 1Tone). I only replaced the P-side Vol pot because it was very noisy.

So, after buttoning everything back up, I began testing, tuning, setting string height, pup height, intonation etc., when I noticed the following problem:

If I turn the Volume on the J pickup past 8, the sound starts to decrease. If I crank it to 10, it's inaudible.

The P side is fine, even when the J is dead. All the crackling noise is now gone and the bass itself sounds really strong.

I'm assuming that I need to replace the J-side Volume pot with a new one, but I wanted to see if this symptom (decreasing volume after 8 or so) is indicative of another problem that some of you might be aware of...

Thanks,
Ack

Your assumptions are correct. It sounds like a bad pot. Your retailer should be willing to replace the pot. Talk to him first.

Its possible, but sounds to me more like you may have crossed some connection(s) on the re-assembly. If the pot worked before, it should still work. By the way, you don't necessarily have to replace 'scratchy' pots, there is a spray cleaner for that. A small can of it will last more than a lifetime...
