New player with tuning question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have not played bass in years... just jumped back on the wagon and purchased a used Fender Jazz (MiM).

This will probably come off as a stupid question and make me look like a moron.. but I'll ask anyways.

When I tune it up with my chromatic tuner I get EAD and G all in tune perfectly (according to the tuner)

However, I noticed when I check the tuning on the 12th frets it shows A & D are in perfect tune but E & G are flat by not quite a 1/2 step. Shouldn't E,A,D,G all be in tune on the the 12th fret if they are in tune on the open strings?

Yes, they should.

Look at the top of this page. There is a sticky called All Basic Setup Questions Answered Here. Click on one of the guides. Fender's is pretty good. Scroll down to Intonation. Read. Then scroll back to the top and read the entire article.

If that does not clear things up, or something prevents proper intonation, post back and let us know. Some one will help.

Awesome guys... Thanks so much for the replies. The information provided clears things up perfectly.

...kinda wishing they had this done when I walked out the door. But at least know I know I guess.

Best Wishes,
FF
