New Project?...or fast refund?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks....
I wanted to pick your brains about a deal that I made but can get out of...

Yamaha RBX5 5 string with EMG P/J ( appear to be passive? ) pickups....
Finish is pretty nice, action is sweet, ......
Problems? - Some genius re-wired it to include a 9V battery, but there doesn't appear to be a pre-amp.....P pick-up is working, J is not......no pot for lowest position ( assume this is tone control )....2 tuners are gold tone ( seem original ,as bridge is gold also ), 3 are replacements....

What are the possibilities as far as needed parts? Available ? Generic pots ok?....If I need to replace the bridge pick-up, any suggestions?...

I paid $150 as is but the seller is OK with a full refund should I decide to back out.....

Your thoughts and input are appreciated, especially in reguard to possible sources for new and used parts ( besides E-Prey, that is....)

Best Wishes to All

Howard

I did a quickie search and the first one I found for sale was on Craigslist. Mint condition- $250.00.

If that's close to the normal resale value, you are paying too much. If you replace one pup, the missing pot, the mismatched keys and straighten out the wiring You could just get a mint instrument to start with for less money.

I'd definitely get a refund.

That's frikkin hilarious!
Skip the tone on the pups and just wire the J for a volume. That's how a G&L SB-2 is wired. Adjusting "tone" with the amp eq should be a lot more refined anyway.

Craigslist. Raliegh N.C. Posted 10/26/06.

Not really new but pretty current.

What's the retail value of it? I'm not that familiar with that particular bass.

(Most) EMG pickups are active. Not passive with a separate active preamp as is more common.

Maybe, the "genius" installed the battery to make the pickups work, as they require it?

If the PUs are black, no exposed poles and sealed completely, they are probably active.

Yes, they are black and complete covers....Thanks for the feedback...
Still figuring out what to do with this.....other projects are more pressing....

However, I did string it and tune it up, and listen through a Dragonfly ( AMAZING ) headset....seems like a very nice platform for a solid instrument....
