New to refinishing ---- needing help

Is it a must to remove the original painting before painting it?
I just want solid white color on my ugly yellow bass

Not necessarily. You may just need to sand the original finish perfectly smooth and fill any dings properly first, as long as the original finish isn't peeling off. The prep work is the key to a good looking finish. The choice of paint you refinish with is important too as is the skill with which you apply it.

Go to reranch.com and read up - then buy Dan Erlewine's book on guitar repair.

You will spend many hours on the job to get a good result. The base underneath the paint is critical in the final result.
