Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought a new jazz and took it to my local music store to get set up with EB super Slinkys 45-100, medium action, next thing you know plugging it in at home sounds way too trebly.. The action seemed to be lower then medium, do you think thats whats making it sound so trebly?? Advice :-)

You could try turning the treble knob on your EQ down....

New strings always sound bright, just wear them in and you'll be fine.

+1

If you find the treble of your new strings annoying, and if they are roundwounds, then by all means get some flatwounds. Nothing will warm your tone up faster than that.

Ur right, but for some odd reason it was sounding way too bright man, no matter what I did.. And believe me I tried!.. Maybe I should've waited but got antsy with too much treble.. Thanx though!

EB Slinky's are part of the issue. Action does not affect tone.
Buy some real bass strings.

i disagree. theres a few things that action can alter in your sound. first would be the distance between the string and the pickups, witch has a huge effect on your sound. second would be the amount of buzz. jaco's bass used to always be set up so it buzzed up and down the neck- but the way he played, the pickups diddnt pick up a buzz- they made the bass just sound super growly. if he raised the strings a bit it wouldent sound like him anymore (to an extent, atleast.)

but back on topic- your strings are new. enjoy that treble while it lasts!

Lowering action also makes strings closer to the pups. Perhaps tech also raised the bridge pup or lowered the neck pup while leaving bridge pup alone. Either of which could easilly explain the more trebly then should be sound.

If this isnt the problem, pups needing readjusting, only thing I can think of is the ernie balls are much brighter then the strings youve been using.

Try adjusting the pups, lowering the bridge pup. And raising the neck pup if needed or if it just looks real low compared to the bridge pup. If its just brighter strings then your used to, rolling blend toward neck pup and cuting basses treble can work till new sound wears off some.

They've been real enough for me for the last thirty years.
