New tuning for my 6 string ...

EDIT 12/28: Now using D, G, C, octave higher C, F, octave higher F

ALTERNATE TUNING ON 6 STRING BASS:
Drop D, A, D, octave higher D, G, octave higher G

I'm experimenting with a new tuning on my 6 string bass (using appropriate gauge strings). Lately, I got fascinated with the 8 string bass sound (4 paired octaves), but seemed like a one trick pony sound that would not work regularly on most songs in a full band context.

Then I had an idea .... by using my six string bass with wider spacing, I can either play the paired octaves or play single notes: best of both worlds!

It's a little confusing when playing a "normal" part jumping from the normal D to the normal G but I adjusted quickly. To play octaves, I pluck pairs with 2 fingers, but still can fly fairly fast. It also allows for easier voicing of 6ths, 10th and others I didn't often use. Slapping paired octaves and the octave harmonics are cool too.

Since I rarely go lower than a low D, I just did the drop D. On the higher end, I'm up in guitar territory with the higher G. It's actually pretty for finger picking chords up high.

I'm just starting using this tuning, but may keep my 6 string like this. It gives me the larger than life "8 string sound" for a solo or quick riff, but I can quickly return to single notes.

Has anyone else tried something like this (eg paired octaves on a six sting) or similar?

I decided to take everything a full step down (except drop D) to:

D, G, C, octave higher C, F, octave higher F

I'm absolutely loving this! Having the ability to easily play the paired octaves (pairs in unison) like an 8 string bass -- without losing the ability usually to play like a normal bass (single non-octave) is awesome.

This tuning is a keeper on my 6.
