Unhappy newbie mistake, yanked on my cable and damaged it and maybe the jack too

What a dumbass newbie thing to do, I yanked on the cable and clearly damaged the plug. Not sure about the jack yet. Now it hums and crackles.

I can fix the cable/plug with a trip to radio shack. But it makes me think, duh, that's why you see the cable strapped up to a second point on the body as a strain relief.

So how do folks run the cable to protect the plug and jack from accidental tugs/pulls? Do you loop it around the strap, or connect it with somthing to the bottom strap post etc?

Do you do the same thing at the amp side? What is good practice to avoid screwing up equipment?

1) ALWAYS look the cable around the stap:

2) Open the bass up and see if all the wires are still solid. If not a little soldering will fix that. If you dont know how, its a VERY useful skill to learn, so learn it.

3) Run a new cable in and see if the old one is broken. I always use Planet Waves cables as they seem pretty much indestructable (the standard one, not the classic one). If the old one is broken, just throw it away and get a decent cable that will last you for years.
