noisy badass II

hey

On the open D string of my bass the bridge makes a horrific pinging/rattling noise. Upon closer observation I noticed there there are grooves in the bridge made by the string (are they suppose to be there?).

In addition to the rattling, almost all of the notes on the d string have a somewhat "fretless" quality. The attack is really slow sounding and it sounds like the volume changes.

My bass is starting to drive me crazy. What should I do?

thanks

I think the slots may be a bit loose. They actually need to be smaller than the string. The nut can also do the same things of the strings do not fit tight enough.

The slots need to just be a solid resting point for the string, rather than a place for it to vibrate. If the slot is to big, it can move back and forth when you pluck the string, and make it sound bad.
