Is this normal? My Low E buzzes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I got this yamaha attitude bass acouple of days ago and its action is very low. i like low action...

all the strings feel great except for the e string which hits the higher frets when i fret it from the 1st to the 8th frets roughly when i pluck hard. the only way to prevent it from hitting the higher frets is to pluck very softly which is not my style at all...

so Im wondering if its normal? btw, i tried adjusting the bridge to let me e string have higher action. it helps just a little...but doesnt really solve the whole problem. plus, only having my e string have high action...abit wierd aint it?

is it possible the problem is due to the type of strings...? thanks

hey man, thanks for replying.

i used the method on gary willis site and it seems the neck has very little to no relief whehn i press the 1st fret and the end of the neck...does it need set up?

also, my bass dont have the truss rod hole, theres a pick up in the position. its a bolt on neck....

oh yeah, i tried measuring the relief again. and the gap between the string and the fretboard is really small, barely noticeable in the middle. at the last frets the string touches the fretboard...

also, thanks for helping man. lookin forward to hear frm u again

no man, no holes in the headstock sadly...

when i asked the previous owner of the bass, he said that its normal because of the low action. the amp only takes in abit of the buzz. but its really annoying when im practising, especially at low volumes...

both the attitude 1 + 2 models should have the it as described above, just above the nut. Is the headstock marked normally (with Yamaha)... if not it could be that its a replacement neck and the trussrod can be adjusted from the bottom of the neck. If you remove the screws from the pickguard (carefully) and lift it up a tiny bit you should be able to see a 'nut' at the bottom of the neck. If you dont have one at the top, nor bottom, i'll be stumped! Sounds like you definetly need to get that adjusted for a little relief!

i checked thoroughly through the neck, its not exactly the same version as in your pic. I would upload a pic if i can, but my laptop doesnt have infrared....so cant xfer the pics frm my phone...

anyways my pickguard and pickups are covering the hole at the btm of the neck if there's one...not sure if im gonna remove the strings and stuff though...ive never strung a string in my whole life. i just started playin..:-x

i just checked with the previous owner and it turns out that i have to remove the pickguard and the neck pickup before i can get to the truss rod!

but anyways, i spoke to friend who has played bass for awhile. he told me that low action is for people with a light touch...i used to think it only applies for the fretting hand. but he said that it applies to the plucking hand too...

so i tried playing lightly on the plucking hand and the situation is much better...maybe i should stick to this 'light' style?
